PERSONALITY:
First and foremost, Kung Jin is decisive and quick to act. He hates lying low and sitting by and waiting; once he's made up his mind on something that he believes in or wants to do, he stubbornly follows it to the end and is loath to be dissuaded from his path. In terms of actually getting things done, this is a plus, but whether things are done in the simplest way with his incredibly straightforward attitude is another story. The best example's seen in his dealings in Outworld-- if not for his quick thinking, he and his team would have never gotten access to the Outworld Emperor himself, but if not for his rash actions in freeing a thief, they never would've gotten into trouble with the Emperor, either. It's truly a double-edged sword, making him an unpredictable ally to have in many situations. This frankness carries on to his manner around other people, as well. Jin is quick to judge and often speaks his thoughts very plainly, which tends to come across as brash or rude. (Probably because he is both brash and rude.) Naturally, Jin's also a prideful person. He's cocky and self-assured by nature and projects a casual sort of air about it at the same time: he's good at what he does, in short, and he wants everyone to know how easy it is for him. Not even authority figures are exempt from this, especially ones he believes himself capable of besting. This also means that his competitive streak is a mile wide-- and that he doesn't always play completely well with others. In his earliest interactions with his Special Forces team, he's either making snippy remarks at Jacqui or questioning (or outright ignoring) Cassie's strategies; he bickers and makes sarcastic remarks about the team and other superiors right under Johnny Cage's nose; he even questions Sub-Zero's superiority in a fight right to his face despite knowing full well that the man is leagues ahead of him in terms of life experience.

Of course, not all of this confidence is genuine. Kung Jin's sense of pride stems from his upbringing as a member of the Kung clan. Jin is the cousin of both Kung Lao (and likely Liu Kang by extension), who had participated in the final Mortal Kombat tournament, and descendant of the Great Kung Lao, who had defeated the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung and saved Earthrealm generations ago. In Jin's own words, the original Kung Lao had fought 600 years ago, but he's brought up at family gatherings as if it'd all taken place a lot more recently than that. As proud as he is of all of this, it means that he carries a heavy legacy with him; Jin is always conscious of the need to live up to the achievements of his relations and must front what confidence he can't muster up himself. Furthermore, Jin is gay in what's implied to be a reasonably traditional family and culture: he initially refuses to train at the Wu Shi Academy out of fear that he'll be rejected by the Shaolin monks. Though his anxiety over the acceptance of his sexuality by his family, friends, and the Shaolin has largely passed, it's not a stretch to assume that some of it remains. It only adds to the insecurities he hides with bravado.

And, of course, Kung Jin isn't always rude or a know-it-all: he also follows his personal code of honor to the letter. Having been a criminal out of desperation himself at one point, he displays a great deal of sympathy for the vulnerable, taking pity on petty thieves. He also shows sympathy for his revived cousin, whom his family had rejected based upon the idea that Lao could never shake the sorcerer's evil influence. Jin always aims to protect victims of circumstance, believing always in second chances for people who deserve them. This also means that, in spite of all his sarcasm, he really does appreciate being with his team. Jin is aware that they play an important role, and rash though he may be, he still wants to help the cause and save the world as much as anyone else does.

Furthermore, Jin always stands with his friends and allies when they need him. It takes a while to win him over, since he's so often combative and disagreeable, but once he deems a friend a friend, he'll fight by their side and protect them even at risk to himself. And although it doesn't always seem like it, he's very much capable of sympathy and of worrying about people he cares about. After a handful of sharp comments at Jacqui about her former revenant father, he finally asks her-- genuinely-- what it was like having grown up with him, and with the fear she and her family had of losing one of their own again. He listens and relates his life's story to that of his friends and gladly commiserates with the legacies that all four of them must follow. And, when Cassie defeats Shinnok on her own, he admits that he's impressed and thanks her for it. Blunt though he is, Kung Jin has a good and loyal heart underneath it all.

Futurology season 1 changes:
Jin's service with ALASTAIR has refined him into a more mature, team-oriented version of himself. Over the year-plus, he was challenged, faced with both his own weakness and the fact that he needed to set many of his own judgments aside for the good of the team. He's grown in compassion and in understanding, as well as, importantly, tact: after facing the consequences of impulsivity time and time again, he thinks twice before he acts more often. And although he's still got that same sharp tongue and brash demeanor, time and his propensity to stick up for the underdog have uncovered a nurturing streak that was only present before in slight. Finally, he's gained more confidence in himself as an individual with no family legacy to be stacked against, as well as a non-judgmental environment in terms of his sexuality. In short, his immature traits have been somewhat tempered as Jin grows up and works to become a role model and rallying point for his friends and teammates.

ABILITIES:
Kung Jin, a trained Shaolin monk, is a capable martial artist-- he is competent enough to fight with or without a weapon, typically utilizing acrobatic maneuvers and powerful, often airborne kicks. He isn't superhuman or anything, but he trains enough to maintain peak physical condition and strength for a mortal human being.

Jin is also an expert marksman: he makes precise, deadly shots with a bow and arrow, as well as throwing weapons (primarily a chakram). Both of these weapons come with additional effects, which I will detail below.

Jin's bow:
... on top of being a great staff weapon and bludgeon due to its size, is able to imbue Jin's shots with a poison, stunning, or flame aura:

- The stunning arrow's effects lasts for six seconds.
- The flaming arrow's effect lasts for six seconds (though anything he sets on fire is, of course, still going to be on fire).
- In-game the poison arrow saps health and lasts for six seconds, but for Futuro purposes I'll say that the poison arrow's effects are extreme sluggishness, dizziness, and nausea for sixty seconds, though the arrow itself's only poisonous for the first six.
- The dragon head at the top can also "breathe" small spurts of fire, in a short jet or a roughly fist-sized fireball.
- Jin can also summon the bow into or out of his hand at will, though this becomes more difficult if he is distracted.

Futurology season 1 abilities:
Through Season 1's bonus AC bank, Jin has gained two notable powers:

Blood Arts - Gale Edge (as approved here):
Through training with crosscanon player character (Reika Kagura of God Eater 2), Jin picked up a very basic form of Blood Arts; though normally only available to God Eater canon characters, his friendship with Reika allowed her to pass a form of the power onto him. This ability is connected to the weapon Jin had trained for Blood Arts in, his chakram from home, and takes the form of four short bursts of energy (like so) that he can fire out when using the weapon as a short blade.

Probability Manipulation (as approved here):
Jin has beginning control of “luck”: when encountering an improbable situation, he can enact his power to make the unlikely occur in either his favor or against an opponent’s favor. This means that Jin is, in effect, a D&D character with loaded dice!

He must be aware of the chance in question, however, so Jin has to be immediately viewing whatever chance occurrence he is affecting. For example, if Jin were face to face with a gunman, he could use his powers to either misdirect a bullet just enough that it would either graze or miss him, jam the gun, etc etc… however, he would be unable to use his powers if the gunman were sniping him from a distance. Events must also be physically possible: for example, if Jin used his powers then drank poison he’d… get poisoned, but if he used his powers then chose from a row of bottles that might or might not be poisoned, he’d be inclined to choose a safe bottle.

Additionally, if used to affect someone else’s “luck” adversely or if overused, there is a high chance the ability will critically fail, affecting Jin negatively instead. (i.e. Jin jams the gun so it never fires, but then trips and falls on his face in front of the gunman.) This ability will never be used for PvP or in plot-related threads without explicit mod/player permission and discussion, up to including the use of actual dice rolls!

To make more room for plotting and prevent making Jin overpowered, this ability began to take shape in the final battle of season 1-- Jin will slowly gain mastery of it in season 2, but will not acquire a capability past what I have outlined here without mod permission and discussion.

HATHAWAY.
SUITABILITY:
Jin's loyalty to ALASTAIR and Audentes would have been enough to keep him on board, but after the defeat of Zymandis he's more than a little concerned about the repercussions that ALASTAIR's actions have had on the state of the multiverse. Coming from a canon with a sensitive, war-prone collection of universes, he's eager to continue the work ALASTAIR started and to help keep the peace in the multiverse rather than letting it lie and possibly becoming complicit in any further disorder.

Also, he'd miss his old ALASTAIR-vet friends and boyfriend, so he's not ready to go home just yet!!! :'|

There's a chance he'll fuss over the new guild structure at first, but, ultimately, will be grateful for Ophelia's relative autonomy (and probably complain a whole bunch about Imogen's leadership until he gets comfortable in the new organization tbqh). He'll also be VERY grateful for the incentive, as the opportunity to do something to benefit his own universe as well as others will be incredibly appealing...

INCENTIVE:
Jin's incentive will be to strengthen diplomatic ties back home, between Outworld and Earthrealm!! Historically (see: centuries of spine-ripping death match tournaments) these two realms have always struggled to establish lasting peace. Jin would be very, very pleased if Hathaway negotiators could be sent in to liaise between the worlds and ease tensions on a more long-term basis than the previously existing (and now thoroughly violated) non-aggression pact. A peace treaty or alliance is a lofty ambition, but as far as the negotiators are able to get would be appreciated.

SPECIALIZATION:
1. NEGOTIATOR:
"But I recall an Earthrealm expression: 'There is more honour among thieves than diplomats.'"

Though not as skilled a talker as a fighter (seeing as he's usually the one getting himself into AND out of trouble...) Jin's still a shrewd thing: in his former life as a thief, his wits were often the difference between life and death. He's a voracious learner especially in terms of other worlds' cultures and politics, so Negotiator!Jin would definitely be a great choice to bring out and develop his diplomacy skills. Especially I'm looking to hone in on this aspect of his characterization in s2!

2. BRUISER:
an easy second choice - as a ~~dumb jock~~ born fighter, Jin's a shoo-in for Bruiser! He has all the decisiveness, protective instinct, confidence, and will to hop into the fray to defend his guildmates that speak to this specialization... and the hard head to match. Jin has no problem being on the front lines, and especially after his tenure with ALASTAIR will have the flexibility needed to both give and take orders on the battlefield. This is second because I have played a lot of Jin taking this type of defensive role in season 1 and would prefer to explore other IC avenues, but I'd be cool taking Bruiser for him too!
